Produce is often picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves. The longer it takes to get produce from farm to table, the more likely it will be to lose valuable nutrients. When produce is harvested ripe, it is often easier to chew and digest and it tastes so much better. Ripe produce is sweeter and more flavorful. Produce is shipped an average of 1,500 miles before being sold (and that is only in the U.S.). Buying local saves energy and helps the environment.
